Tips for a photo that gets accepted

Frequently asked questions

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). The head, from chin to top of hair, must measure 1 to 1⅜ inches, and your eyes must sit 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom edge. PassPic sets both for you.

Can I smile in a US passport photo?

Use a neutral expression or a natural, slight smile with both eyes open and your mouth closed. A neutral face is the safest choice.

Can I wear glasses?

Generally no. If you must wear them for a medical reason, the State Department asks for a signed statement. Check their page for the current rule.

Can I take the photo with my phone?

Yes. Use the back camera in good light against a plain wall, ask someone to take it, and upload it here. PassPic crops it to the official size and sets the background to white. It does not retouch your face.

Does the State Department allow a photo with the background replaced?

The State Department says not to change your photo using computer software, phone apps, filters or artificial intelligence. PassPic crops, sizes and replaces the background with white, but does not retouch your face. The strictest way to follow the rule is to take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall in even light, so there is little to change. Check the current State Department page before you submit.

How do I print it?

Download the 4×6 sheet and print it as a regular 4×6 photo at 100% or “fit”, not “fill”. Cut along the grey lines. A 4×6 print at a photo lab is often under a dollar.

Can I use a 4×6 photo for a passport?

Not the whole sheet. A US passport photo must be 2 × 2 inches, so print the 4×6 sheet from PassPic at a photo lab and cut out one 2×2 photo along the grey lines.

How do I take a 2×2 passport photo with an iPhone?

Use the back camera, not a selfie. Have someone take it from several feet away against a plain wall, with your head centered and fully in frame. Then upload it here and PassPic crops it to 2 × 2 inches.

Do I need to bring a printed 2×2 photo to apply?

If you apply in person or by mail you submit one printed 2 × 2 inch color photo. If you renew online, you upload a digital photo instead. The State Department accepts JPEG, PNG and HEIC files between 54 KB and 10 MB.

Is my photo kept?

Photos you upload are used only to make your picture and are deleted automatically after 1 hour. See the privacy policy for details.
